Pan Dulce, Nostalgia, and the Magic of Comadre Panaderia

Mexican sweet breads played a big role in my childhood. We’d pick up a sack of pan dulce for two dollars, not because it was the best quality, but because it was comforting. The sight of a concha still feels like home. It reminds me of mornings in the kitchen, warm light coming through the window, and the simple joy of something sweet to start the day.

So when I say that Comadre Panaderia in East Austin took that childhood memory and turned it into something transcendent—I mean it. Founded by Mariela Camacho, the daughter of Mexican immigrants, this local bakery blends tradition, creativity, and care into every bite. Her baked-daily conchas, cakes, and cookies are more than just pastries—they’re love stories told through food.

On my recent visit, I tried a seasonal twice-baked concha filled with almond frangipane and fresh blackberry. Yes, I drooled. You will too.

If you’re looking for the best pan dulce in Austin, get there early—her conchas often sell out before noon. Grab a cup of champurrado and head out to the sunflower-lined back patio. And trust me: don’t sleep on the gluten-free pink cake.

Comadre Panaderia is open Thursday through Sunday, 8am–2pm, on the East Side of Austin. It’s a perfect weekend stop, whether you’re exploring the neighborhood or just craving something delicious and made with heart.
